Jessica Sweetman is one of the new members of the Fort McMurray Famous 5 committee and holds the position of treasurer.
Jessica hails from Ontario, and her husband who works for Syncrude, was relocated to Fort McMurray a few years ago, so the family moved out west. It just goes to prove – all roads lead to Fort McMurray!
Where do you work and what are your general feelings about living/working here?
I’m a Controller for Aboriginal Companies located in Fort McKay. We love it here. Although this is a small city, it is also very much like the towns my husband and I grew up in. The people are friendly and you often see the same people, which is great for relationship building. We live in a court with wonderful and caring neighbors. There is plenty to do.
Why do you volunteer? What do you get out of volunteering?
I like to help people and give back to the community. It is a great feeling to help others.
What other organizations have you volunteered for?
Fort McMurray Food Bank, Prince Albert Public School, other social organizations
Why are you volunteering for the Fort McMurray Famous 5 Speaker Series?
I am passionate about education and career opportunities for young people, women and girls in particular. I like to see people engaged and encouraged. I don’t believe anyone should be held back because of gender, the sky is the limit!
What “lessons” do you take home with you from the speaker series?
I always feel encouraged to overcome any roadblocks that may occur. It is uplifting to see what others are passionate about and how they have accomplished their goals.
What would you tell others about coming to the F5 Speaker Series?
Come and enjoy a wonderful night out with women from our community. Besides being inspired by a great speaker and learning something new, you get a tasty meal too!
